The Top Option Products & Exchanges of 2007
General Sentiment
U.S. markets were generally lower on the final day of 2007. This mirrors Europe and underscores investors’ ongoing concerns regarding credit and the housing market.
The CBOE VIX was up slightly to 22.14 on Monday and the broad averages were down about ½% in moderate volume.
Calls lead puts overall with a slightly bearish directional bias as we’ve seen a number of out-of-the-money call sellers begin to establish some bearish positions for 2008.
2007 Volume
While the numbers won’t be official until the OCC completes its 2007 processing, listed options set quite a few records last year.
Our preliminary data shows a total of well over 2.8 billion contracts changing hands in 2007. That is a 40% increase over the 2006 levels. Increased market volatility clearly played a large part in this volume surge, with several single day records set in the heat of the July/August correction.
