Tracking The Commitments Of VIX Traders

If you hold a position larger than a specified threshold in a futures or options contract that is regulated by the CFTC, your clearing firm must report it and classify your position as either commercial or non-commercial. Futures traders have been tracking these reports for years, but I and m not aware of any studies that analyze the history of VIX futures commitments...

Weekly Options Volatility Tracking Report

Last week, I noted the very wide spread between short-term realized and implied volatilities. Although the selloff on Friday alleviated conditions slightly, [5] the spread is still large enough that traders inclined to be net sellers of options need not fear occasional daily increases in realized volatility.

Profiting With Options During Earnings Season

Sure, the World Series and Super Bowl Sunday are much-anticipated. But personally, I can and t wait for the excitement of earnings season, because I get to watch my favorite sport four times a year! Every publicly held company has to report not only their performance during the past quarter, but they also typically provide outlooks for the following quarter and possibly the full year as well. No other market event offers more opportunities for traders to earn big bucks not only on companies and fiscal hits and misses during the past three months, but also for the effect on shares from all of that "other" data that means so much to Wall Street.

Look To The Left When Trading Options

Often in my option classes I ask the students a question that only on the surface appears to be tricky: "What comes first, the price action on the chart or the print?" Most of the time, the students give me that puzzled look which tells me that most likely they are somewhat confused, yet as the discussion commences, the perplexity becomes more noticeable.

Weekly Options Volatility Tracking Report: Why Index Volatility Is Holding Steady

My sense of the markets at this juncture is that elevated implied correlations are truthful, even oracular, with too-high index implied volatility representing not so much the jump risk with which the VIX is usually associated as the unwelcome prospect of individual equities tracking each other too closely.

Weekly Options Volatility Tracking Report

The jump in volatility indexes noted in our previous report was met with a similar decline last week. The VIX could easily make a new 52-week low before 2009 is through. Gold implied volatility advanced sharply on Friday and s price decline, with GVZ closing just shy of my 30% short-term target. The shift in the volatility skew in gold deserves attention: if traders continue to pay higher premiums for downside protection this week, that should be confirmation that the parabolic run in gold is over for the moment.

Weekly Options Volatility Tracking Report: Repricing Debt Burdens

When equity index options consistently price in moves of more than 1.5% on two-thirds of trading days, Friday and s trading range should not be a surprise, even if you believe equity volatility is significantly and consistently overpriced. We wouldn and t expect longer-dated volatility futures contracts to move noticeably on last week and s news, but even the December VIX contract only lifted slightly.

How To Be Risk Averse Using Options: Part 1

There really isn and t an easy or obvious way for an investor to be highly risk-averse in this market, not when one of the biggest tail risks that people want to protect themselves against is inflation. Big investors can try taking the Taleb approach of buying large numbers of out-of-the-money options and reckoning that a bunch of them will pay off when the next crisis hits, but that and s not a strategy available to most of us...

Weekly Options Volatility Tracker Report: The VIX Puzzle

As I and ve noted on many occasions, the relationship between spot VIX and longer-dated VIX estimates has not "worked" as a directional indicator for at least several months. This looks like a genuine puzzle: the premium VIX futures traders are willing to pay and/or requiring in order to sell is too steep and has been too persistent to be dismissed as a phenomenon typical of the "wall of worry" that bull markets proverbially climb...

Scrutinizing an Options Trade

In my last article, I explained the reasons for entering into a bearish trade. I will present the scenario in greater detail which involved exiting for a profit after being in the trade for only a few days.

Straddles And The Volatility Risk Premium

This article looks like a new attempt at establishing an old (but important) thesis, namely that there is a persistent volatility risk premium in options on equity index products (futures, ETFs, etc.). Most studies have attempted to define this premium in terms of option selling, and this is the first I can recall that looks at the negative returns from straddle purchases as additional evidence.

The better way to play this is with an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that covers the sector, such as the Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF). Or, better yet, you could commit even less cash and play LEAPS...

Is The VIX For Real?

There and s been lots of talk about the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) recently, and not just because it and s stuck in the stratosphere. Some traders have raised controversy about whether it is an accurate reflection of volatility in the market place, especially after the October VIX futures expiration. They were upset about the disconnect between the VIX futures, which closed around 53, and the VIX calculation itself the next day. The futures were subject to a final settlement with that calculation and it came in at around 64. "Ouch!" if you were short. But, it and s highly likely that those traders don and t understand the VIX.

Direction Doesn and t Matter: Trading Options Delta Neutral

The consequence of having a position that is delta neutral is that for small changes in the price of the stock, the total value of the position does not change. Note the emphasis on the word small. In effect, by making a position delta neutral, we have eliminated, or at least reduced, the impact of a change in the value of the stock on the value of the position.

Even during a strong trend, indexes and equities never go straight down or straight up. They vacillate and bounce and pause and drift.
Trading, Overtrading, and Waiting Part Three: The Waiting Game and The Iron Condor

Having the discipline to wait for a good trade is so difficult that it can be prohibitive for many options users. There are constant temptations to force a trade or to enter into mediocre trades at bad prices. The most likely result of failing the waiting game is revealed when the real action resumes. When the market starts moving again, you and re suddenly stuck with a trade that is too narrow or too risky for the current market conditions. The end result is a trade that is likely to be a loser.

Basic Options Strategies: Bull Call Spread (Vertical Spread) - Part Two

A bull call spread tends to be profitable when the underlying stock increases in price. It can be established in one transaction, but always at a debit (net cash outflow). The call with the lower strike price will always be purchased at a price greater than the offsetting premium received from writing the call with the higher strike price.

Many investors write puts because they are willing to be assigned and acquire shares of the underlying stock in exchange for the premium received from the put and s sale. For this discussion, a put writer and s position will be considered as "cash-secured" if he has on deposit with his brokerage firm a cash amount (or equivalent) sufficient to cover such a purchase.

The versatility of index options stems from the variety of strategies available to the investor. Index puts are useful if you are anticipating a decline in the broad market or market sector measured by the underlying index in the near future. These products are also useful if you want to take an aggressive position with a great deal of leverage.
