  • Question from Cambel: Oh no! Did the millennials kill cheese? Are they coming for fluid milk next?
  • Question from Inlo: Is it only possible to exercise a FOP that has the same month as the underlying future? If I?m long an April CL future do I also need an April put option? Or can I exercise a May CL option on a April CL future?
  • Comment from Olivetrader2: I like the Thursday show, actually. I was supposed to be downtown but I couldn't go. Listening to your show instead.
  • Question from Sam Harris: Question for TWIFO. Hello Nick, Mark and Sean. Fun program. I particularly like the research guests since they usually bring up topics that are new to me. I was talking with a friend recently about exercise and settlement (nerds, I know). He brought up an interesting time frame to exercise an option - when it goes ITM and the spread is simply too wide. Exercise may actually be the cheaper option.
  • Question from Mizander: Why exercise future option early? Doesn't seem make much sense?

  • 72% - Bitcoin Options
  • 8% - Ripple Options/Futures
  • 15% - Ether Options/Futures
  • 5% - Litecoin Options/Futures

Listener questions and comments

  • Comment from Ledger8: Enjoyed your panel on crypto derivatives. Good job hitting the big points. But I was disappointed that #bitcoin options don't seem to be on the radar anytime soon. The CME rep made it sound like we won't see them listed this year. Bummer!
  • Question from Allani: I trade a fair amount of EMini S&P options. I'm eyeing the Dow but don't see a significant amount of volume there. I've heard you mention this before on the TWIFO program. Why do you think the S&P contract generates so much more interest than the Dow contract? After all Dow is probably quoted more in the media than the S&P?

FlashPoll: Crude oil has been on a tear this week. We know that many of you are trading options on this hot commodity. Quite simply - which options product are you using to slake your thirst for Crude oil? WTI? USO? XLE?

  • WTI
  • USO
  • XLE
  • Other

Listener questions and comments:

  • Comment from Olivetrader2 -I may have the key to the weeklies mystery or I may be captain obvious. If I want to trade weeklies I need to ask for weeklies options limits to my clearing firm. Regular options limits don't apply. I use @Trading_Tech. I never asked for them because my trading results are usually not good around expiration. And weeklies = more expirations.
  • Question from Leif - Is the use case for Russell 2000 options the same as S&P and Nasdaq - primarily covered calls and protective puts?
  • Question from Tatuf - It looks like crude is setting up to be a decent candidate for call ratio spreads (short 1, long 2). Certainly would have worked out well over past few weeks. Am I just blinded by recentness or does skew data support this long term? OTM calls typically aren't bid too aggressively in WTI.
  • Question from CRHabib - Can CME put out straddle runs on the bitcoin futures contract? That would be fascinating and quite useful.

  • 34% - Tesla, TSLA
  • 21% - VIX
  • 35% - Bitcoin
  • 10% - Russell 2000: E-mini, RUT

Listener questions and comments:

  • Question from Toni - I've been listening to TWIFO since the launch (along with Vol Views and Advisors Option). Thanks for so many hours of listening and learning. I think I have a problem with TWIFO though because you guys are slowly luring me to the "dark side" of Ag products. But I'm not really sure where to begin because I'm a complete novice when it comes to agriculture (mostly trade spy and single name equity options). Is there one product that you feel is the friendliest or the least intimidating for beginners? Also are there any good resources out there for budding Ag options traders?
  • Question from JLM54 - See a lot of talk about spreads between similar commodities (WTI/Brent spread, KC wheat / Chicago wheat). What about spreads between different commodities that may move in accordance to similar fundamentals? Is anyone tracking these relationships (WTI/Gold, Gold/10yr)? Are there any relationships you watch regularly that are outside the established intra-commodity spreads?

I've always thought the tricky part is finding the market makers to provide the liquidity...I assumed the big volatility was the reason crypto options weren't being pushed. Topics this week include:

  • Corn
  • Soybeans

Futures Options Feedback: In which the listeners take over.

  • Question from T Mal - Jared, What is your opinion on the current speculative interest in corn/beans? It seems large right now. What is your opinion on the extremely large open interest? Corn open interest in particular is very large.
  • Question from Adam Coker - Can you explain the nature of options liquidity for the Ags. They seem to have a unique trading structure that's focused around the planting and harvesting cycle. Are those the months that generally have the most volume and volatility?

Futures Options Feedback: Listeners have their say

  • Question from GWCH - You buying that this cryptocurrency rally is based on the sharia law approval?
  • Question from Kennedy -Soros is getting into Crypto. Time to sell?
  • Comment from CTWills - The news of a 16th options exchange make me appreciate the predominantly centralized futures options market. With so many exchanges it's hard to even get a 10-lot spread off these days.
  • Question from Taz41 - Can the strategy screener tool handle ratio spreads and iron condors? Thanks for the great show and so many great tools.
  • Question from BLIO3T -Which products are the ones that you guys have the hardest time wrapping your heads around? For me, it's the hogs. No thanks.
  • Comment from Tom Frank - Not sure I agree with your consensus that covered calls are better for novice options traders. Puts typically have higher implied volatility and should generate higher returns than covered calls over time and have a better risk/reward. The novices would probably appreciate the higher returns.

Which product/segment do you think will experience the most Volatility over the coming trading week (through the close on Friday 2/20) SPY SPX VIX WTI Crude Gold Bitcoin BTC GLD USO

  • S&P500: SPY, SPX. VIX
  • Gold: GLD, Come
  • Crude Oil: WTI, USO
  • Bitcoin: BTC

Listener questions and comments:

  • Question from Ken Aidan -I'm a crude swinger mostly trading short-term direction intraday in the futures. Are the options good for this use case or is that more for long term strategies?
  • Question from Luke T. - Why does USO suck so badly? Not sure why anyone would trade this over the futures?
  • Question from Thomas F. - I used to trade a lot of spy options but I've been lured over to the eMinis. Not sure why more people don't trade these things. What do you think it is that keeps people trading spy instead of eMini and what can be done to bring them to the dark side?
  • Question from Mark Brant -I'm partial to selling 45d straddles. Does QS highlight the highest IV% straddles of the CME products? It would be cool to sell the richest straddles daily!...45d straddle decay is the universal sweet spot to avoid gamma risk, but only at IV extremes, and even then one can lose a little. SPAN margin is ideal for CME straddles. I will gladly pay for 45d straddle IV reports. Rich straddles are an edge!
  • Question from GWCH: You buying that this cryptocurrency rally is based on the sharia law approval?
  • Question from BLIO3T:Which products are the ones that you guys have the hardest time wrapping your heads around? For me it's the hogs. No thanks.
  • Comment from Mark Brant:Long beans! Also NOB spread has no quit in it!

From the article: About 40 percent of bitcoin is held by perhaps 1,000 users; at current prices, each may want to sell about half of his or her holdings, says Aaron Brown, former managing director and head of financial markets research at AQR Capital Management. (Brown is a contributor to the Bloomberg Prophets online column.) What's more, the whales can coordinate their moves or preview them to a select few. Many of the large owners have known one another for years and stuck by bitcoin through the early days when it was derided, and they can potentially band together to tank or prop up the market.

Because bitcoin is a digital currency and not a security, he says, there's no prohibition against a trade in which a group agrees to buy enough to push the price up and then cashes out in minutes.

Other investors say the whales won't dump their holdings, because they have faith in the long-term potential of the coins. "I believe that it's common sense that these whales that own so much bitcoin and bitcoin cash, they don't want to destroy either one," says Sebastian Kinsman, who lives in Prague and trades coins. But as prices go through the roof, that calculation might change.

Bitcoin Madness Strikes the Audience

#TWIFO Question of the week: Which options product do you want us to discuss live this Friday 1:30pm CT?

  • Natural Gas
  • Russell 2000
  • WTI Crude Oil
  • Or...Bitcoin

What Is Bitcoin Reference Rate?

  • The CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate (?BRR?) is a daily reference rate Of the U.S. Dollar price of one bitcoin as of 4:00 p.m. London time. It is representative of the bitcoin trading activity on Constituent Exchanges and is geared towards resilience and replicability.
  • METHODOLOGY: Aggregation of trade executions occurring on Constituent Exchanges between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. London time
  • All Relevant Transactions are added to a joint list, recording the trade price and size for each transaction. The list is partitioned into 12 equally-sized time intervals of 5 minutes each. For each partition separately, the volume weighted median trade price is calculated from the trade prices and sizes of all Relevant Transactions, i.e. across all Constituent Exchanges. A volume weighted median differs from a standard median in that a weighting factor, in this case trade size, is factored into the calculation. The BRR is then given by the equally-weighted average of the volume-weighted medians of all partitions
  • DISSEMINATION: Once per day, every day of the year including weekends and holidays, between 4:00 p.m. and 4:30p.m. London time

Bitcoin Futures Contract Specs

  • BRR: Currently $6811
  • SIZE: 5 bitcoin, as defined by the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate (BRR)
  • Minimum Price Fluctuation: Outright: $5.00 per bitcoin = $25.00 per contract. Calendar Spread and Basis Trade at Index Close (BTIC): $1.00 per bitcoin = $5.00 per contract

Could Bitcoin Futures Rein in the Big Price Swings?

  • After CME announced that they would soon be offering Bitcoin futures, the price of the digital currency took a big upward swing. However, CME is of the opinion that futures could actually put a stop to Bitcoin?s synonymous volatility.
  • CME will be putting in place special price fluctuation limits that will help protect investors from the notorious price swings, but these same protections could also help ease the price swings and make the digital currency settle down somewhat.

  • Many believe that it is these violent swings that are stopping mass adoption of the digital currency, especially as a currency. If there was a more steady rate, then Bitcoin would be able to stretch more towards being a currency while still holding onto its power as a store of value.

  • Question from Chris Thomas: Nick always talks about taking advantage of the skew. Creating a collar, buying the underlying, selling a call with high vol and buying cheap put protection or doing the opposite of that trade if the put has higher vol. I don't have as much experience with futures as I do indices, but "taking advantage of the skew" using spy for example would certainly have lost a ton of money over the past few years (if you shorted stock, sold puts and bought calls). I am definitely leaning more towards selling spreads on the side with high skew in futures because that has made a ton of money over the past few years in SPY and I don't seem to be making money on these collars. Any opinion on this? Anyways, thanks for everything you do and thank Nick for the awesome software.

  • Comment from FContangotrader: I cannot wait to start trading options on corn and Bitcoin.
  • Question from Bobter: Can you trade options outside of U.S. trading hours?
  • Question from LV56: I am mostly trading futures intra-day to scalp a few ticks - primarily S&P, crude and gold. I am interested in options but I do not see how to apply them to my trading style. Is there a way to use options for very short term intra-day tick scalping?

  • Aggressive return to old skew?
  • Fed week came and went

Futures Options Feedback/Weekend Flash Poll:

These are crazy times for all markets from commodities to equities and volatility. Which crazy level will we hit first?

  • VIX Below 9
  • SPX Above 2500
  • WTI Below 40
  • AAPL Above $160

Listener questions: What do you want to know?

  • Question from Paul - Mark, What is your take on the timing of an investment in silver right now? I just got out of the market and I am thinking of investing in silver - either the traditional options or an ETF that tracks physical bullion like SLV or SIVR. I am leaning towards SIVR for its lower expense ratio.
  • Question from Lawrence T. - You guys (I think it was Nick) talked about rent a while back. You should make that into a regular segment or report. Maybe who is paying the rent report?
  • Question from Charles Allenby - Can I not just do most of this stuff in my stock portfolio using USO, GLD and other ETFs? Do I really need to open a futures account?

  • Comment from Tommi - I think WTI weeklies struggle because producers are focused on the longer portion of the curve.
  • Question from Neil Avere - Can you rundown Quikskew again. Still not really sure how to read it.
  • Comment from Stallon - Why so much concern about low crude volatility? We are just in a new volatility regime for crude right now. Just because crude Vol is low does not meant that selling it is not a winning trade. Seeing the same thing in broad equity volatility right now.

  • Question from Meravol - Interesting piece in Modern Trader about selling breakeven strangles. Have you seen? What are your thoughts of this technique? Is it me or are there new techniques for selling strangles all the time that always tend to blow out? Are you not better off selling IC or IB due to limited risk?
  • Comment from Tom S. - The barrel of oil question was cute. Maybe worth a show about the actual delivery process?

  • Comment from Hawkeye: The Business Show should use as its motto, "The Business Show: It is an audio train wreck!" You cannot stop listening no matter how much you know you should not. While I am at it, I really like Nick and the new revitalized futures shows. Even though I do not trade futures options, I still use the concepts to trade some of the ETFs/ETNs.
